Wow, what a difference a week can make. No schools, limited work for some, uncertainty related to finances, travel, childcare, food. So much for us to be upset and stressed about all while being on lockdown. There is fear, and yes, it is real. But what if we were able to flip the script and see the good in this situation? What if instead of focusing on those things we can’t do or have to change that we spend time focusing on the good things and the opportunities that we DO have? Is this easy? Of course not. But it is effective. I’d like to offer ways you can best support your health and wellbeing during this difficult time.
1. Mindset. We can all focus on the negative side of the situation; it is the easiest for sure. What if we all saw the good even the tiniest good thing? Being too busy is a common complaint many of us have. Look at all the time we have been given now to catch up on those chores, spend face to face time with children and family (if safely able), rest, create, laugh. I challenge you to pause, take a few deep breaths, and see the beauty in a tough situation.
2. Practice Gratitude and Service. Daily write down 3 things you are grateful for. Better yet, get the kiddos involved and share with each other. Sit back and watch where this takes you. Do something kind for someone else, especially the elderly and those at higher risk. Even just a phone call to check in is powerful.
3. Food Is Medicine. There could not be a more important time for us to focus on what we are putting into our bodies. We want our immune systems to be in tip-top shape, and what we eat plays a major role. Now is the time to consume nutrient packed, immune boosting, whole, clean foods, especially fresh or frozen fruits and veggies. Processed and packaged foods lead to inflammation and this does not lend a hand to boosting the immune system. Eliminate sugars, too. Wondering what foods are great for our immune system? Here are a few: sweet potatoes, ginger, garlic, oatmeal, green tea, turmeric, broccoli, and citrus
4. Water. Stay hydrated. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day. For example, if you weigh 100 lbs, drink 50oz of water each day.
5. Get outside. The outdoors are still open! Vitamin D from the sun is a powerful immune booster.
6. Exercise. Even with the gyms off-limits, many at-home workouts can keep you on track. Go for a walk. Have a dance party. Moving the body is caring for both your body and mind. Here are a few places I like to use for a sweat sesh at home: nourishmovelove.com, PopSugar Fitness, Yoga with Adrienne on youtube, and Pinterest.
7. Sleep. When we are sleeping, our body is recovering and repairing, and this includes our immune system. Shoot for 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
8. Stress. Stress levels can be elevated during such times, and when we are chronically in a state of stress, our bodies cannot fight off the bad guys as well. Pause, breath, do something you love, even if just for 10 minutes.
9. Supplements. Vitamins C & D support our immunity also. Elderberry syrup or gummies are full of antioxidants and vitamins to help boost immunity, and it has been used for years.
10. Eliminating Germs. I know it’s been said many, many, many times, and that’s because it truly is the #1 way to stop the spread of infections. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (that’s as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice). Use hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Disinfect your surfaces at home and in your car, especially door handles, remotes, light switches, and countertops. And yes, keep your distance from others and avoid crowded places and those who are sick.
“We” as a collective community will get through this. Stay hopeful. Let’s all do our part:)
Wishing you health, inner peace, and joy!
